Exercise classes, support groups, and community events have cancelled to help contain the spread of COVID-19 and keep our communities safe. As a result, many people with Parkinson’s will lose access to the support and services they need to manage the disease, maintain functional mobility, and live a quality life.

In a swift response, many providers have starting offering exercise, therapy, and support services virtually online. The sudden shift to online service delivery is a challenge for providers and community members, alike. Suddenly, the ability to access and navigate the Internet and online video programs becomes a barrier to receiving necessary services.

What is Zoom?

Zoom is an online video conferencing platform that’s free and easy to use. It is the most popular platform for webinars, online exercise classes and support groups, and virtual events. Nearly all of the online Parkinson’s programs will use Zoom, so it is crucial to learn how to navigate it.

Tips, Tools, and Tutorials

In partnership with the Davis Phinney Foundation, we have created some tools and tutorials on how to access and navigate Zoom. Please view the tips, instructional video, and step-by-step directions on how to access and utilize Zoom to participate in online programs.

Tips

You will need an email to use Zoom

Every online program has a different Zoom link. When you register for a webinar, exercise class, or other program the host will email you a link unique for that program. Some organizations may provide the Zoom link for any specific program on their website. But most links are shared via email.

Download Zoom Ahead of Time

You will need to download Zoom onto your computer, smartphone, or tablet or iPad before accessing videos. It can take up to 5-10 minutes to download and install Zoom to your device. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to troubleshoot any issues. You will only need to download Zoom one time. All future programs will automatically open in Zoom.

When you register for an online program, an email with a Zoom link will be sent to your email address. Once you receive the email, you will be able to install Zoom and participate in a meeting. View the tutorials below for step by step instructions.

How to Access a Zoom Meeting

The Davis Phinney Foundation created this very helpful YouTube video that provides a-step by-step guide on how to access a video with the Zoom application, including downloading Zoom, joining a specific meeting, and navigating the tools you can use as a participant within the Zoom app.

Printable Zoom Tutorial Sheets

We have also created printable PDF instructions for how to install Zoom, access videos, and navigate tools to successfully use the program. They address how to use Zoom on a computer or laptop, smartphone, tablet or iPad, or the telephone. The Zoom Tools Tutorial discusses how to adjust screen size, check your sound, and interact with the speakers.
